World Travelers from Germany

This young German couple who picked us up have traveled around Europe, Central America, and the US with this van for around two years! They took us from Teslin Lake, Yukon to Watson Lake, Yukon. It was a total of 273km and took us around 3 hours. They were in their mid-20s. They saved up some money before they started, but they would also find some construction work or other odd jobs on the way.

They told us they bought this second-hand van in Germany. It was a Mercedes Benz and previously a van for paramedics. They converted this van into their home on the road. I could see that they put lot of work into the woodwork inside for the ceiling and many storage rooms. On the wall, there were a lot of postcards, stickers, flyers, and other souvenirs they collected from all over the world.

Evan sat in the front, and I sat at the back. The space behind me was their double bed. I was sitting on a stool next to their bed. You can see that the van actually didn’t have space for other passengers. We were grateful that they still picked us up.

They were both really easy-going and friendly. We were chatting the whole way about traveling, tips for budget travelling, hitchhiking, their odd jobs. They told us they wouldn’t mind us finding another ride, because their old van couldn’t go very fast. They really understood what hitchhikers need. They really wanted to help, and trusted us completely. We did try to get another ride while they were resting for lunch, but they picked us back up again when we didn’t have any success. It was so good to meet someone randomly who we ended up getting along with so well and had a lot of values in common.

When we got to Watson Lake, they wanted to up a sign they brought in the famous Sign Forest in town. After they put up theirs, they also found a wooden board and a sharpie in their trunk so that we could put one up for my hometown too. 🙂
