What did I learn?

History of Digital Marketing

Knowing the history of digital marketing in the beginning of the course helped me understand where digital marketing is heading in the future, my future. The whole digital marketing field basically started when I was 9 and it developed rapidly throughout my young adulthood!

Yahoo was launched in 1995. My first personal email address was registered with Yahoo, when I was in middle school!

Google analytics started in 2005. Wow, really? I’m that old! I remember setting it up for my blog on yam.com, my first personal blog ever. My mind was TOTALLY blown away by this technology.

Google started to better targeting their audience for their ads with people’s search history in 2010. I remember it was so controversial when they first started this. Isn’t it a bit scary that we didn’t fight against it and most of us have all accepted it by now?

Terminology

There are way to many terms that are mentioned in this 50-minute introduction lesson to be listed here. I was already familiar with most of them, such as CPC (Cost Per Click), KPIs, performance marketing, etc. However, I was still able to learn new things because the instructor talked about so many examples alongside all of these terms.

Processes and Indicators

My favorite take-aways from this class: the process of performance marketing (analysis, optimization, communication, and efficiency) and the indicators for some of the common objectives for a business. For example, a new business’s objective might be branding, and the company can look at some indicators such as reach or engagement to see if it’s reaching the objective.

Why is it valuable?

Learning about the history of digital marketing is just like going down the memory lane for my past 20 years. It’s important to see in what ways online marketing has affected my life (and your lives), so its future development is going to make more sense.

Learning about the terminology with clear examples is the key to learn the new terms well. After the new terms are learned, that is a start to be able to talk about the field of digital marketing with a more precise language.

It was really useful for me to see some of the common objectives for a company being listed out, and which indicators can be used to measure these objectives. Now, I can go check the business that I have wanted to build for a few months by now and use the indicators to see if I haven been reaching my objective, which is branding at this point because it is a new business.
