我超喜歡吃酪梨,從小喝台灣夜市的酪梨牛奶長大的。旅遊到這麼多國家之後,我發現很多國家的超市、市場都會賣酪梨,有時候價錢是便宜到不可置信,有時候是付不起的天價。

I grew up drinking avocado smoothie from night markets in Taiwan and it’s one of my favorite food to have in my mouth. I’m really lucky to have avocados almost everywhere I have lived. I can’t always afford them, but they are around in almost all the countries I have been to.

每個國家常看到的酪梨通常都是不同品種,顏色、形狀、大小都不一樣。最有趣的是,當地人最常用的吃法,也都不一樣。

I noticed that every country seems to choose a specific variety of avocado to grow and sell more, for different reasons such as weather. They come in different shapes and sizes in different countries, and the common ways to enjoy them are also different. I’m going to share my experiences with avocados around the world with you all. Enjoy!

台灣酪梨 Avocados in Taiwan

台灣種植好幾種不同品種的酪梨,通常種在台灣中部。最常在市場看到的品種會像是下面這種,他們的表面通常是光滑的,橢圓形,而且通常比我的手掌大很多。

Taiwan grows several different varieties of avocados, but the most common one you’ll see in the markets are shaped like this below. The skin is usually smooth and they are usually much bigger than my palm.

在台灣,大家最常聽到吃酪梨的方式,就是酪梨牛奶,要是要更local一點,你可以加統一布丁,這樣的酪梨牛奶嘗起來更濃郁。我記得我21歲第一次到美國的時候,跟美國朋友提到我們在台灣酪梨是這樣吃,大家都很驚訝,因為他們沒有想過酪梨可以吃甜的。根據維基百科提到,這樣的酪梨牛奶在巴西、越南、菲律賓、和印尼都可以看到。

The most common way that all Taiwanese people know to prepare a avocado is make a smoothie out of it, with Taiwanese custard, sugar, and milk. Just like with bubble milk tea, you can choose your sugar and ice level. This is commonly sold in shops with fresh juice, or in night markets. When I first came to the U.S. when I was 21, all my American friends were shocked to hear that we would put avocado in a sweet drink. According to Wikipedia, you can find avocado drinks similar to this in Brazil, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia.

美國酪梨 Avocados in the U.S.

根據維基百科提到,酪梨是1825年被引進美國的,之後酪梨就在美國夏威夷、加州和佛羅里達種植。在美國,最常看到的酪梨形狀大小事像下面這樣,大小通常就是比一個手心小一點。

According to Wikipedia, avocados were introduced to the U.S. in 1825. Now they’re grown in Hawaii, California, and Florida. The most common kind of avocados you’ll see across the U.S. are shaped like this below. They are usually a little smaller than palm-sized.

我注意到一個很奇怪的現象,美國買到的酪梨都會有「突然熟」的現象,可能剛買來前四天都很綠,突然第五天,外皮就轉黑紫色、變軟,然後當晚切開裡面就已經開始黑掉了。

One thing that is really interesting about these avocados is that they always seem to get ripe all of the sudden. They could seem to be green for 4 days straight, and they suddenly turns dark purple and go bad on the 5th day.

在美國,大家很喜歡把酪梨做成泥,加上檸檬和不同調味料做成墨西哥式的guacamole。另外一個現在很風行的吃法,就是把酪梨放在吐司片上,上面再加一些雞蛋,這種吃法有非常多的美味搭配。

A really common way to prepare avocados in the U.S. is make it into guacamole, which came from Mexican cuisine. A popular way to prepare avocados nowadays is to put it on a piece of toast, with an egg on top. There are various different versions for this yummy dish.

巴拿馬酪梨 Avocados in Panama

在巴拿馬看到的酪梨通常長得像下面這樣,大小跟一個手差不多,表面跟台灣的一樣是光滑的,但是形狀很特別,像是瘦瘦的西洋梨的形狀,第一次看到,我還不太確定是不是真的是酪梨。

The avocados I see in the stores in Panama usually are shaped like this below. They are usually the same size as my hand. The skin is smooth, like the ones in Taiwan, but I found the shape really novel. When I first saw it, I wasn’t really sure if it was avocados or not.

這裡的酪梨好像都是慢慢熟,不會像美國的那種突然熟,前幾天買了上面那顆酪梨,每天查看能不能吃的時候,都可以感覺到它每天軟一點點。成熟的時候,它的表面並不會變成黑紫色。

Also, they seem to ripe in a reasonable speed. It doesn’t seem to ripe all of the sudden like the ones you find in the U.S. When they’re ripe, they don’t turn dark purple like the ones in the U.S. either.

因為武漢肺炎,現在巴拿馬政府關閉所有餐廳和娛樂場所,所以我不知道在餐廳、小吃店他們通常酪梨是怎麼用,但是我看到巴拿馬人在家自己吃酪梨時,都是直接新鮮的酪梨切薄片,配飯和其他蔬菜、肉類一起吃。很有趣的是,有一天我點韓國拌飯的外賣,裡面竟然也有放酪梨!

I haven’t seen how avocados are usually prepared in restaurants, since I have been stuck indoor during this national quarantine. In home cooking, I have seen people slice them up and eat them fresh as a side with their starch, meat, and vegetables. One funny story: We ordered a take-out for Korean Bibimbop in Panama a few days a ago, and it had avocados in it!

不好意思有點圖文不符,但是碗裡面綠綠的東西就是酪梨。叉子上像玉米的東西是一種中美洲很常見的炸的穀類。 Sorry that I don’t have a good picture of the avocado in the bibimbop, but the green stuff in the background in the bowl is avocado.

目前為止,這些所有的酪梨吃起來沒有感覺口味有特別不同,但是酪梨的品嘗專家一定可以告訴我吃起來有甚麼不同,要是這世界上真的有這種專家的話。

So far, all of them taste the same to me, but I believe a avocado connoisseur could probably taste the differences.
